July 3, 2019 Parent Communication

SMS 6th Grade Parents (yes, that is you now!),

I hope this finds you and your child(ren) enjoying your summer. Clay Young (assistant principal) and I have been getting ready this summer for you and your child to join us this August and cannot wait to begin serving your family! Before I leave for the 4th of July holiday long weekend, I wanted to share a few things with you:

  • An annual email from the district will be coming later this month with information as to how to register your child(ren) for the upcoming year. All families will need to complete this process. Please look for that email in the next couple weeks.
  • There is a K-12 parent resource fair on July 30at Timberline (4-7p). The evening open to all Waukee families will include help with registration, free meal, free physicals, free haircuts, free dental & vision checks along with 20+ community vendors. More information to come from the district.
  • Wondering when Open House or the first day of school is this August? Go to our Dates to Note blog tab: http://blogs.waukeeschools.org/dbarry/dates-to-note/
  • Is your family new to Waukee or were part of the north feeder system/Waukee MS last year and switching over to South? Complete our new-to-Waukee survey so we can get to know you better.
  • Would you be willing to be a mentor/buddy family for a new-to-Waukee family this year? Email me today so I can connect you!

That is all the information I have for you right now. If your child is (or you are!) keeping track, July 13th marks the official half-way point of summer for students. 🙂 I will be with a high school youth group mission trip next week and returning to the office on Monday, July 15. If you need anything or have any questions, let me know.

Have a safe and enjoyable 4th of July!

He who laughs, lasts,
Doug Barry, SMS Principal

5th Grade SMS Families,

This past week, we started our 4th quarter which means your child is on the home stretch of their elementary careers. Although this may bring a tear to your eyes, we at South MS are very excited and look forward to having your soon-to-be 6th-grade child with us at South Middle School this coming fall! 🙂

I wanted to take the time to remind you of our Parent Night at South Middle School on Monday, April 15th. This parent only presentation will take place in the South MS large gym during the times below. Following the 20-30 minute presentation, parents will be able to take a self-guided tour of the building and visit on of our 6th grade pods. Principals will be available for questions as well.  We prefer you come during your scheduled time, but if it doesn’t work for your schedule, you may attend at that alternate time listed.

  • Students last name A-K: 6:00-6:30 PM
  • Students last name L-Z: 7:00-7:30 PM

We understand how busy our Waukee families are, but we hope you don’t miss this informative event. One of our priorities is to help your child experience a positive transition to middle school and your attendance at Parent Night is the first step to make this happen. If you are not able to attend, we will have the information posted on our school blog: http://blogs.waukeeschools.org/dbarry/smsnextyear/

If you have any needs for the night of our event, please let us know. We look forward to seeing you at Parent Night on April 15th as we start the journey together as a team to ensure your child’s academic, social and emotional success.

Sincerely,
Clay Young, Assistant Principal (cyoung@waukeeschools.org)

Hello Southside Elementary Parents!

We are very excited to start our transition thinking and process in preparation of your 5th grade child becoming a part of our South MS family next fall! As part of the process, I wanted to get some information to you today as we begin our 2nd semester this week in Waukee.

Assistant principal, Clay Young, and your child’s future SMS counselor, Haylie Steffensmeier will be visiting elementary buildings next month to meet students, visit with teachers and enter schedule requests for students. A schedule request form will be coming home from your child’s 5th grade teacher a week or so prior to the visit. The one choice students will need to make is whether he/she wants to be in band and/or choir next fall. Tentatively planned visits as of now are, as follows:

  • February 4 Maple Grove (tentative 10:30am)
  • February 4 Eason (tentative 9 am)
  • February 11 Woodland Hills (tentative 9 am)
  • February 13 Brookview (tentative 9am)

6th grade parent orientation is set for Monday, April 15th. This parent only presentation will take place in the South MS gym during the times below.

In May, 5th grade students will visit South MS during the school day with their 5th grade teachers. This is a great chance for the students to see the building, classrooms and walk the hallways. More information will come in the spring regarding this student visit.

If you have any pressing questions now, let me know. You can reach me at 515.987.3222 or dbarry@ waukeeschools.org. Otherwise, we will see you in April. Have a great rest of your week.

Middle School Choir – Join the fun!

Our students and music teachers had fun putting together these informational videos for our incoming students. They REALLY want each incoming student to consider joining choir. So whether you love to sing or have never been in music/choir, consider starting at South MS with choir on your schedule.
