Brookview Vision: Building leaders of integrity and character who are motivated to make a positive impact on the world around them

Brookview Pledge: I pledge to be a leader of integrity and character who is motivated to make a positive impact on the world around me.

Everyone is a leader in his or her own way! We believe that every child possesses leadership skills, but needs time to learn about how to be an effective leader and must be taught how to collaborate with other students and adults.

The Leader in Me

The Leader in Me is an approach to creating an environment of leadership in our schools. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People are integrated into our school traditions, systems, curriculum and culture, and work in close connection with our school-wide PBIS, our guidance curriculum, and 21st Century Skills. The Leader in Me and the 7 Habits emphasize skills to help students be successful outside our classroom walls. Some of the pillars are:

  • Leadership
  • Accountability
  • Adaptability
  • Communication
  • Creativity
  • Cross-cultural Skills
  • Initiative and Self-Direction
  • Problem Solving
  • Responsibility
  • Teamwork

The 7 Habits

  1. Be Proactive
  2. Begin with the End in Mind
  3. Put First Things First
  4. Think Win-Win
  5. Seek first to Understand, Then be Understood
  6. Synergize
  7. Sharpen The Saw

Our Journey

We began our study of the Leader in Me in the spring of 2011 with a staff book study. The book study helped drive our decision to develop a school vision and go through the 7 Habits Signature Training. As a staff, it was important to us to work on creating student leaders and not students of compliance. Through this process, staff was trained in the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and encouraged to begin living the habits with the belief that you will be better teachers of skills that are practiced. This process also provided us with the opportunity to create a common language to begin using in our conversations with each other and students.

The focus then shifted to taking the 7 Habits and leadership principles to students. We began to teach the habits in classrooms, develop classroom leadership roles, and look for ways to integrate the habits into our existing practices.

In year two of our leadership training staff completed Empowerment Day. This training helped us dig deeper into what structures were already in place and what areas to focus on in the future.

During the 2014-15 school year we applied for Lighthouse status and became the 1st Leader in Me Lighthouse School in the state of Iowa.
