Waukee Police Department Safety City

What: Parents in the Waukee Community School District with incoming kindergarten students are encouraged to register their children for the Waukee Police Department’s annual Safety City program. Attendees will learn about safety from officers and volunteers during this week-long course, featuring eight different sessions from which to choose. Online-only registration is open now at www.Waukee.org/SafetyCityReg.

A miniature city will be used to teach students correct street crossing techniques along with vehicle safety by using tricycles as automobiles. Safety City will also include lessons on: 

  • Bullying
  • Pedestrian Rules
  • Street Crossing
  • Traffic Lights
  • Waukee Safe House Program
  • Window Safety
  • Poisons and Drug Abuse
  • Bus Rules
  • 911
  • Fire Safety
  • Respect for Authority
  • Seat Belts
  • Bike Safety

When: Safety City Sessions:

  • June 4-8: Session 1 from 9-11:30 a.m. and Session 2 from 1-3:30 p.m.
  • June 11-15: Session 3 from 9-11:30 a.m. and Session 4 from 1-3:30 p.m.
  • June 18-22: Session 5 from 9-11:30 a.m. and Session 6 from 1-3:30 p.m.
  • June 25-29: Session 7 from 9-11:30 a.m. and Session 8 from 1-3:30 p.m.

Safety City is very popular. Early registration is encouraged. The cost is $50 plus processing fees. If families are unable to afford the registration costs, assistance may be made available by calling 515-978-7979. The registration deadline is May 1 or when program sessions are full.

 Info:                The Waukee Parks & Recreation Department has a great spring and summer filled with programs, activities, trips and festivals! Highlights include:

  • Waukee’s popular festivals/events such as the March 31 Easter Egg Hunt, free Movies in the Park and the annual Fourth of July festivities
  • Mini Sluggers T-Ball league and Parent/Child Blastball
  • Youth camps including All-Star Sports, Art in the Park and Explore the Outdoors
  • Youth music, cooking and engineering activities
  • Special needs and adaptive sports activities

STEM Makers

What: STEM Makers allows students the opportunity to experiment with different types of materials and tools in an environment that is based on their individual interests. Students will learn robotics and programming, fuse plastics, play with OSMO’s, make creations using a 3D pen, and so much more! Your child will spend the week thinking like an engineer! Students will understand and complete the engineering design process, learn how to use STEM tools safely, solve problems using different tools, and design and build a makerspace project of their choice. Taught by Grant Ragan Elementary Teachers, Megan Trader and Jessica Hammans. For students entering grades K-5.

Day: Monday-Friday

Time: 9:00am-12:00pm

Camp Field Day

What: Everybody loves Field Day! Camp Field Day is a safe and fun-filled camp that focuses on encouraging a lifetime of physical activity! Our goal is to not only expose campers to a wide variety of games and activities, but to demonstrate the importance of leadership as well. Campers will be participating in a variety of activities that will include: water target challenges, slip and slide, water balloon competitions, organized team games, water relays and much, much, more!

Time: 8:30-10:00am (K-2), 10:30am-12:00pm (3rd-5th)

Chess & Fencing (Spring Sessions)

What: Youth Enrichment League chess lessons are designed to engage beginners through advanced students. Students will have a lesson, practice, and play each class. All equipment is provided and students will receive a cadet booklet to use during and after class. Join this sport of the mind and be a part of your school s chess group. Sign up and create a checkmate today! New and returning students are welcome.

Fencing is one of the fastest growing sports in the USA. Youth Enrichment League fencing is designed to engage beginners through advanced students. Students will receive world class instructor as the curriculum is designed by a former olympic fencer. Students will get a physical workout while learning honor, manners, and respect in the sport of fencing. Safety is a priority and all equipment is provided. Get in the game!
