Great Beginnings for Families

What: Join us for a fun, informative series of workshops for parents/caregivers of infants – kindergartners that will provide the skills and understanding necessary to raise healthy young children. We will explore the key principles of child development, positive discipline and guidance, helping children cope with anger and conflict, encouraging learning through play, along with building strong families and temperament. Cost is per family, and childcare will be provided.

What: Get ready to Pinterest Thrive! You’ll impress yourself with five quality projects that will knock your socks off. We aren’t talking paper and pencil crafts – you’ll learn chalkboard art (and take home your own chalkboard masterpiece), canvas design, create your own personal framed glitter initial, design an arrow/felt flower wooden plaque and a unique quote with stick frame. We won’t have #pinterestfails…we will #pinterestthrive! Instructor is Waukee Middle School Teacher Librarian, Kelly Reinhold.

*Now open to grades 6-12. Catalog reads grades 6-7.

Chess & Fencing

What: Youth Enrichment League chess lessons are designed to engage beginners through advanced students. Students will have a lesson, practice, and play each class. All equipment is provided and students will receive a cadet booklet to use during and after class. Join this sport of the mind and be a part of your school s chess group. Sign up and create a checkmate today! New and returning students are welcome.

Fencing is one of the fastest growing sports in the USA. Youth Enrichment League fencing is designed to engage beginners through advanced students. Students will receive world class instructor as the curriculum is designed by a former olympic fencer. Students will get a physical workout while learning honor, manners, and respect in the sport of fencing. Safety is a priority and all equipment is provided. Get in the game!

Tinker Time with Ozobots

What: Ozobots are small, smart toy robots that empower gamers and learners to code, play, and create. Your child will learn coding and programming in a fun, uplifting learning environment. Students will help the Ozobot complete challenges and design their own challenges for others to try! For students in grades 3-5. Taught by Grant Ragan Elementary second grade teacher, Megan Trader.

Tinker Time with Dash & Dot

What: Dash & Dot are award-winning, hands-on learning tools that teach students creative problem solving, coding, and robotics. In this course, students will learn how to program Dash and Dot to complete challenges such as launching a ball across the room and teaching Dash to play the Xylophone. For students in grades K-2. What: The Language Project is based around discovery, experience and play in the target language. Students will learn Spanish through music, games, stories and immersion in the language. Strengthening Families Program

What: Learn how to maintain and/or build a positive relationship with your youth during those challenging teen years and to prevent your youth from having serious behavior and substance abuse problems. This skills-building program from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is for parents to attend with their youth ages 10-14. Parents will sharpen their nurturing skills that support their children and enhance their skills in effectively disciplining and guiding their youth. Youth will be given a healthy future orientation, an increased appreciation of their parents, plus learn skills for dealing with stress and peer pressure. Each week a free meal will be provided from 5:00-5:30pm for all attending families along with free child care for younger children.

Waukee Invitational XC Mile Run

What: All third through seventh grade students in the Waukee School District are invited to participate in the Annual Waukee Invitational Mile. All runners will receive a finisher ribbon and medals will be awarded to top place-winners of each grade level. A traveling trophy will be awarded to the elementary school with the highest 5 finishers!

Parents are responsible for getting runners to and from the event and are encouraged to park at the Robert Brownell Sports Complex across from Eason Elementary. Runners should bring a water bottle. Questions may be directed to the mile run coordinator, Missy Brush, at 987-5161 ext. 4505.
